Kit Miles founded his eponymous studio in 2013 with one vision: to create a textile collection steeped in the values of quality, exquisite draughtsmanship and a futuristic, often surprising use of scale colour and imagery.
Kit Miles studio believes in the power of design to redefine environments and the life of those who dwell within them. From soaring geometrics to botanicals brimming with life, our collections seek to capture a world most complex and beautiful and, in doing so, provide a site of boundless inspiration, helping people feel more inspired and connected to the deeper world around them.
The studio’s flair for producing fine products is continually evolving, highlighting a restless exploration of what print design is now and what it could be in the future.
Their most important values are in excellence in quality and draughtsmanship for each and every design. The studio’s ability to render detailed and, at times, surrealist imagery, has enabled them to create a unique world of design.
Through the process of hand drawing, the studio creates wildly imaginative depictions which explore new possibilities in design. Kit Mile’s studio aim to produce an exquisitely manufactured end product that elevates the craft of pattern design for the 21st century and, in the process, helps to create beautiful interiors.
Kit Miles Products
Corinthian Check is a playful reimagining of elements of classical architecture. Orderly geometric shapes are loosely rendered in broad strokes of pigment colour, giving an abstract impression of what could be arches, windows and doorways. This large-scale design was inspired by the notion of a transient city made of pigments and inks. Rendering classical concepts of proportion with free and open marks and a joy of colours, a vast watery city looms as if it were a mirage in the hazy distance, setting a visionary, theatrical backdrop.

Nimbus brings into view a scene as if lying beneath a Sakura tree, depicting flowers, leaves and branches bursting forth into life. Quin Orchid is a surreal scene that draws together opulent design and delicate nature. A fretwork of brilliant gold structures a geometric architecture. Stairway to Utopia’s inspiration comes from the gravity defying concrete constructions of some of London’s most iconic brutalist buildings, the effect is that of a broken diamond which staggers elegantly across the wallscape with subtle stepping gradations of tone and colour in each shape.

Tiber Archways is a modern resituating of ancient Roman architecture. Classical arches structure an undulating, geometric repeat, the deft use of shadowing convincing the eye of its three-dimensionality. Inspired by the marble quarries that lie just outside of Rome, the shapes read as though carved from this coveted material, their subtle veining and gentle colouration creating a trompe l’oeil effect. This clean, striking rendering of the classical speaks to the studio’s passion for resetting traditional design in contemporary terms, working to imbue a modern scheme with a sense of timelessness, or to sharpen a traditional scheme with a modern edge.

Koi River distils the tranquillity of fresh water, capturing the soundless rhythm of the life therein. Koi carp noiselessly meander just below the surface of a crystal-clear mountain lake, the pleasing repetition of their reticulated scales and the slight ripples they create giving a gentle regularity and mesmeric quality to the composition. The fine pen-work is iridescent, with subtle tonal shifts giving a sense of balance and dimension to the complex of patterns. Printed as a series of panel onto a metallic non-woven paper, inks applied in such a way as to appear crisp, whilst reflecting light with a gentle blur evoking the quality of a water.

Ultraviolet Garden illuminates the hidden and strange realities of the natural world. Fretwork emulates the hand-carved geometric patterns traditionally found in panelling systems of the 1800s. They adorn gnarly, textured bark which almost seems as if it is peeling, giving the design a tactile dimension. The rhythm and repeat of the twisting branches and candle-like pines suggest an ornamental forest marvellous in scale that is augmented by a muted, sophisticated palette. The pared-back simplicity of the motif brings a sparseness and serenity to the composition.

Birds in Chains is a visual symphony, at once impactful and complex. The luminous majesty of the birds arrests the eye, whilst the intricacy of the ever-unfurling ornamental and botanical design keep the gaze rapt. The vertical, serpentine repeat of twisting vines, palms and chains give a sense of soaring dimension. Electric flashes of colour loom out of subdued hues, and the near-neon bright birds seem as though they might lift off the walls and take flight. Akira’s abstract composition and rush of pigments prompts illimitable flights of imagination. Diagonal Gradient is a visual interpretation of light-speed travel. A series of shards chase and gain on one another across sharply angular diagonal paths.
