UK based designer Bethan Gray has taken inspiration from the traditional forts of Oman for her Nizwa Wallpaper. The design features the technique of marquetry, which was used as far back as the 16th century. It reflects the rounded architectural composition of the forts’ castellation’s, whilst the detailed mother of pearl patterning creates a stunning iridescence. This variation in shade and iridescent resembles the effect of the sun on the different elevations of the forts.

Weaved cane is one of the oldest techniques used in furniture manufacturing. Cane strips have been used in objects since ancient times, originating as basket material and evolving into furniture. Caned furniture first appeared in Holland, England and France around the 1660’s thanks to bustling trade with Asia. Thonet revolutionized the furniture industry in 1859 with its 214 chair. The simple caned seat contributed to the chair’s extraordinary lightness, which meant that it was less expensive to produce and transport.

Anna’s work shows a fascination of contrast between the idyllic surface of bourgeois existence and the inevitable dark side of life. Although her techniques may differ – from 3d-fantasy worlds in boxes to textile and paper collages – her work always displays an ironic, almost cynical view of the world. The work "Enchanted Garden" shows an romantic flowery landscape, made of paper cuts.

For this collection we scanned the floors of an old canal house in Amsterdam. Piet Hein Eek: “A lot of companies have made marble reproduction products, but never in the way we envisioned it. So we decided to give it a try. When the printing proofs came in we had the exact same thrill as we had five years earlier with the Scrapwood Wallpaper. Marble wallpaper is available in several different tile sizes and colors. You just want to install it everywhere.”

Smoke was Maarten Baas’ graduation project at the Design Academy Eindhoven, in 2002. It was the end result of his research on beauty and perfection. After the wood is charcoaled, they’re preserved in a clear epoxy resin, which makes them usable again. When needed, pieces are re-upholstered or otherwise fixed so that they get back their original function. Maarten & Piet Hein got together to make Burnt Wood wallpaper.

Was inspired by travels to Japan where timber is used in many ways. The working title for this new collection was “Zen Wood”. And that’s just what it is. Piet Hein Eek: “This collection is more than ever inspired on the idea that our wallpapers should provide an artificial alternative for a wooden wall. In this case by using 3d timber strips. I am certain people will love the attention to detail which is the trademark of NLXL products. Like Scrapwood, Timber Strips make you want to touch the wall to make sure it isn’t the real thing.”

In 2009, MERCI selected this vintage ceiling tins as a décor concept for the Parisien store. Since the opening, there is not one day without seeing a visitor taking pictures of the MERCI tin counter or asking to buy it. This phenomenon has given MERCI the idea to get together with NLXL to design and market the wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins. Historically, tin ceilings were introduced to North America as an affordable alternative to the exquisite plasterwork used in European homes. It was between 1890 and 1930 that thin rolled tin-plates were being mass-produced. Tin ceilings were traditionally painted white to give the appearance of hand- carved or molded plaster. But, today the irregularity and the aging give all the appeal to this American architecture icon.

NLXL is the first wallpaper manufacturer to introduce Cane Webbing wallpaper. The collection comprises of a modernistic take on webbing by Studio Roderick Vos, as well as a classic approach by NLXL founders Mr. & Mrs. Vintage. The latter can be combined with 4 wainscoting designs. The wainscoting is mounted horizontally on top of the vertical strips of Cane Webbing wallpaper, just like it would be installed in real wood. Ultra high resolution scans make this new collection a typical NLXL trompe-l’oeil product where you will have to look twice to see its not the real thing.
